Motorola have succeeded in combining full touch screen control with a QWERTY keyboard. The Motorola Backflip is a flip QWERTY touch phone with a difference; not only is it packing Android, but it is also packing MotoBlur; the super intuitive, in-house interface from Motorola. “Backflip”; its name is a strong indicator towards the entirely unique form factor the nutters at Moto have chosen. Support for various social networks and online sharing facilities comes as standard, while a full multimedia hub allows access to the on-board camera, music player and FM radio.
At first glance you notice the obvious ugliness of the phone, but at the same time you feel compelled to pick it up and play with it. This is a feeling I cannot explain the Backflip looks very odd with its QWERTY keyboard always on display and rounded edges. The keyboard has been mounted by a flip hinge which swings the keyboard out from behind the screen, the phone needs to be in landscape mode for this, and therefore Motorola have also installed an accelerometer for auto rotation. The rounded edges play there part too, when using the phone for messaging or browsing it feels remarkably comfortable to handle and the combination of the capacitive touch screen and dedicated track pad located on the back of the keyboard, the phone is easy to navigate. The clever MotoBlur interface is socially intelligent and integrates your friends social network activities and events with there relevant contacts in the phonebook. You can also have there SNS information streamed direct to the home screen. This means quick access to tweets, messages and status updates without opening multiple applications. The Android 1.5 OS does a fine enough job on the Backflip, but Motorola have gone a step further with an optional upgrade to the 2.1 version. With the Android OS comes a bunch of Google goodies to help users along with the overall experience. Along with the obvious Google Search, Google Maps and Gmail, the phone also has GoogleTalk for live web chats, YouTube for viewing your favourite clips and uploading some and finally, full access to the Android Market and all that it has to offer.
Motorola has equipped the Android powered Backflip with a full web browser supported by Wi Fi and 3G internet connections, both perform consistently and reliably to deliver optimized web browsing speeds. These high speed connections also support the various messaging features the phone possesses; the like of Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, e-mail and instant messaging are all supported by the phone. There are also an abundance of opportunities to share content online with YouTube, MySpace and Facebook. A 5MP snapper is in place to satisfy the budding photographers out there; it comes complete with auto focus, LED flash and 4x digital zoom, so there is no possibility of you getting a photo wrong. Videos look pretty good on the HVGA display; you can flip the Backflip to landscape for a widescreen perspective. The Motorola Backflip has been pre-loaded with a full music player which can handle many formats. To support such media features as the music and video players Motorola have allowed for memory expansion via microSD card, the maximum load is 32GB but it does come with 2GB as standard. The 3.5mm audio jack is perfect for almost any headphones and the Bluetooth technology allows for wireless device communication for localized sharing.
Have Motorola created the mobile equivalent to Frankenstein’s monster, or have they started something new? The Android device runs a re-evaluated MotoBlur interface which is SNS capable and easy to use thanks partly to the responsive touch screen. With all the other requirements like a camera and web browser, Motorola have a very proficient smartphone in the form of the Backflip. The unique form factor will certainly turns some heads and raise some eyebrows, but this could be good, since when did a little controversy hurt anyone?
